WHAT IS "SUPER TUESDAY"? (Paraphrased and rewritten with help from Wikipedia)

Super Tuesday commonly refers to the Tuesday when the greatest number of states hold primary elections or caucuses to select delegates.  These delegates vote on the presidential candidates for their party at their national conventions. More delegates can be won on Super Tuesday than on any other single day of the election calendar.

In 2008 Super Tuesday is February 5th; Twenty-four (24) states will hold primaries or caucuses on this date. With fifty-two (52) percent of all pledged Democratic Party delegates and Forty-one (41) percent of the total Republican Party delegates at stake, Super Tuesday can also be referred to as the day that determines the party's slate of candidates (but not always- for information about why delegates matter click here.)

HOW DOES A CAUCUS WORK and WHY SHOULD I BRING MY FAMILY?

Both the Democrats and the Republican parties in Alaska will hold caucuses. A caucus is different from a primary. Caucuses are run by their parties and primaries are run by the state for their parties. At the caucuses, those in attendance indicate their support for the candidates competing for each party's presidential nomination. You show up to the place specified and root for your choice of candidate or declare yourself undecided. Then a district convention follows.

At the district convention you can help determine what the policy directions of that party will be. You must be registered with that party or register before the caucus begins (6:00 PM) if you would like to participate in your district convention. AHEA has prepared some suggestions for changes for both the Alaska Republican and the Alaska Democratic Education Platforms. We hope that families will bring printouts of these changes to their party's caucus! Fascinated? More links below!

The reason that showing up to caucuses is more important than voting in the general election is that this is a process by which the American political system must listen to the average citizen. When you vote in a caucus, it is your voice that is important, because you are telling the electorate whom they're going to support and what your issues are!
